Satoshi Kon is the beloved and critically acclaimed anime director of films such as  Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers, Millenium Actress and Paprika, and he suffered an untimely death at the age of 46 on August 24, 2010. Before he did, however, he left behind a final document, a long beautiful ramble, which his family posthumously posted to his blog in Japanese. The final words of the talented artist on the brink of death are touching and were kindly translated by a fan at the time of Kon's death.

Last year, Robert Eggers floored audiences with his chilling tale of 17th century folklore, The Witch. However, it wasn't solely the Puritan nightmare that wowed the crowds, but Eggers' painstaking attention to detail and the film's historic authenticity.  This week we'll explore the historical accuracies of the film's dialogue.

A Look at Some of the Most Controversial Horror Movie Posters of All Time

October 15, 2017  /  Aaron Haughton

Music-video-PORTAL-CURTAIN.mp4.0010-e1464630813599.jpg

Earlier we posted some extremely brutal horror VHS covers. These boxes were all over VHS covers and received some criticism, but not near as much as these posters from more contemporary horror films. Parental outcry caused not just the posters be pulled but the films as well. A bit crazy how much time can change in just a few years.

What's Up Chuck?: The Latest In The Ways Of Chucky

October 15, 2017  /  Aaron Haughton

maxresdefault.jpg

There’s not one Child’s Play movie I don’t like. I actually enjoyed the shift the series made with Bride of Chucky and beyond. To me these films were the right amount of cheese for a possessed killer doll movie. I was on board to try another film from that style of direction and tone. Cult of Chucky premiered on Netflix earlier this month. I wanted to jump in after hearing some great praise for this film. But, I realized I missed Curse of Chucky.

Magic-1978-1.jpg

These are some great trailers that could stand on their own as horror shorts. A lot of these feature footage that was only shot for the trailer, which is great for a horror movie because you have no idea what to expect or who will survive the film. Take a look at some trailers that zero in on audience’s dread and phobias to get them packing into the theater!

The Historical Accuracies Of The Witch Part 1 (Character)

October 08, 2017  /  Aaron Haughton

Last year, Robert Eggers floored audiences with his chilling tale of 17th century folklore, The Witch. However, it wasn't solely the Puritan nightmare that wowed the crowds, but Eggers' painstaking attention to detail and the film's historic authenticity. Being a production and costume designer before turning writer/director, research is no new concept to Eggers. He researched the film over the course of four years while simultaneously juggling costume design and other projects, going so far as to work directly with museums and historians, who helped compile an expansive collection of primary sources, which comprised of volumes of period fashion, animal husbandry, agricultural techniques, firsthand accounts and journals, religious texts, and folklore.

VHS Horror Art

October 01, 2017  /  Aaron Haughton

gty_halloween_mt_141024_16x9_992.jpg

I grew up next to a video store and the public library. Each one had a massive horror VHS section. Even though I couldn’t check out these videos (most of the clerks knew me as a regular and knew my parents wouldn’t approve), I could still wonder up and down the aisles to get a thrill fix. Back then, these VHS boxes held nothing back. Gore, monsters, and partial nudity were splashed all over the box art. Because I couldn’t rent these or get up the nerve to read the back exerpts, I’d make up the story to the movie. These VHS boxes were probably the earliest catalyst to spur my horror imagination...and a lot of my earliest nightmares!
