June 20, 2020  /  Aaron Haughton

Formed by Mustafa Shaikh and Wu-Tang's RZA, 36 Cinema creates a unique experience for film enthusiasts everywhere by marrying live-streaming movies with real-time commentary from directors, actors, film experts, and super fans.

The live commentary helps to give viewers a deeper understanding and appreciation of the movies that RZA and Shaikh love. The first event featured RZA and Dan Halsted providing commentary for Gordon Liu’s Shaolin vs Wu Tang, but their latest event will focus on the legendary Rudy Ray Moore’s delightfully bonkers blaxploitation comedy, Petey Wheatstraw.

This one-of-a-kind event will be held this Friday, June 26th, and will be moderated by 36 Cinema’s own Mustafa Shaikh and feature live commentary provided by acclaimed actor, comedian, and podcaster Donnell Rawlings and chief Film Critic for WBAI RADIO Mike Sargent.

About Petey Wheatstraw:

Synopsis: After being murdered by his rivals, Petey Wheatstraw (Rudy Ray Moore) is resurrected, in exchange for marrying the devil's daughter, the world's ugliest woman.

You can glean from the synopsis above that Petey Wheatstraw in a rare treat of the gonzo variety. Created by legendary black pioneer Rudy Ray Moore and directed by Cliff Roquemore (who previously directed Moore’s riotously comical Dolemite sequel, The Human Tornado), Petey Wheatstraw just may be Moore’s most wonderfully absurd concoction, mixing gangsters with kung-fu action and supernatural surrealism.

Moore made a huge impact on black culture through his stand-up, comedy films, and larger-than-life characters. His profanity-filled, rhyme-heavy proto-rap dialogue delivery rightly earned him the nickname, "the Godfather of Rap". Moore was recently commemorated by Eddie Murphy in the Netflix original film Dolemite Is My Name, which we called a real motherf*ckin’ delight.

Whether you’re intimately familiar with Moore’s antics or totally uninitiated, Petey Wheatstraw will entertain the hell out of you, with the commentary from Rawlings, Sargent, and Shaikh making it an even greater treat. With the feel of watching a movie with a close friend, we think you’ll find that the streams from 36 Cinema are inviting, illuminating, and entertaining.
