Amsterdam: A Star-Studded Mess That Pales In Comparison To Other O. Russell Films

Writer/director David O. Russell’s latest effort, Amsterdam, is a sprawling, star-studded mess that’s too overstuffed and unwieldy to fully connect. It contains one of the year’s most impressive ensemble casts, but for all its combined star power, it sadly can’t muster up much of a charge. It’s undeniably a David O. Russell film, but it’s drained of most of the lifeblood that makes his best work compelling, charismatic, and kinetic.

With POSSESSOR, Cronenberg cooks up a mind-melting experience that invades the senses in the best possible ways, proving yet again that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

With MANDY, writer/director Panos Cosmatos takes everything B movie trash and sacrifices it on the altar in the name of high art as an offering to the midnight movie cinema gods. The result is a blood-soaked Nicolas Cage at full-tilt and a movie-going experience that’s so drenched in LSD that you may catch a contact high. You’ll want to lean in and inhale deeply with this one.
