Viddy Well Recommends: The Holy Mountain

July 16, 2017  /  Aaron Haughton

The Holy Mountain comes from the mind of master surrealist and the godfather of the midnight movie, Alejandro Jodorowsky. The film is full of blasphemous images of christianity, rich visual poetry, and satire of consumerism, militarism, exploitation and religion. Often unexplainable and slightly incoherent, the film allows room for the viewer to superimpose their own meaning to Jodorowsky's many visual metaphors and psychedelic poetics through its near wordlessness. In short, the film is a true cinematic spectacle of the highest degree.

Viddy Well Recommends: Lucifer Rising

July 02, 2017  /  Aaron Haughton

This short experimental film comes from the image-rich mind of Kenneth Anger and is a visual spectacle of the highest order. It chronicles the invocation of Lucifer, or the light-bearer, by Isis in the early Egyptian era, and it’s chock full of visual poetry and accompanied by a sick soundtrack.

Viddy Well Recommends: Blood Diner

June 25, 2017  /  Aaron Haughton

IMG_8347.jpeg

From the beginning of Blood Diner, I felt a strangely familiar vibe. A deranged, blood-covered uncle hands his nephews an Egyptian necklace -- that should've been the first cue. After that, it was one familiarity after another; the sacrifices, the blood "buffet" -- I realized then that I was watching a love letter to Herschel Gordon Lewis' Blood Feast.

Juneteenth Double Feature

June 19, 2017  /  Aaron Haughton

Dating back to 1865, Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. This occurred two and a half years after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which was official on January 1, 1863. Due to minimal infantry to enforce the new executive order, slavery remained unfazed in the south, Texas especially. You can chalk it up to strong southern stubbornness or, well...Texas being Texas, but it wasn't until the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865 and the arrival of a fresh regiment of Union troops that the Emancipation Proclamation could be enforced.
