Experimental Blomkamp Shorts to Hit Steam
Neil Blomkamp (director of Distric 9, amongst others) announced with a tweet last month that he'd like to release some experimental short films via Steam as a test for potential full length feature films, asking fans if they would pay to see them.
A good number of fans replied that they would, which is a good indicator that Blomkamp may have something finite brewing here. This certainly seems like an interesting and interactive way to go about screening ideas in progress, and Blomkamp has already released a few snippets via his YouTube channel for Oat Studios; both of which seem to a satiric take on the gloomy Donald J. Trump America:
These bite-sized segments certainly are intriguing, and we're eager to see how the studio pans out and what type of content Blomkamp will dish out next; although, there's no planned date for when the first film may be available yet. We're also still crossing our fingers -- and not holding our breath -- for Blomkamp's Alien 5; although, that seems like a crapshoot unfortunately.
On the flip side, if the caliber of the shorts match up with Blomkamp's three features (District 9, Chappie, and Elysium), they'll definitely be worth a few bucks to check out. We would certainly pay a few bucks to see a Blomkamp feature length satire on the current Trump administration, which seems like low hanging fruit, but based off these little snippets, his satiric future would be a very imaginative one to say the least. Until further news develops, we'll continue to keep our ears to the ground. In the meantime, remember to viddy well!
